Cheap golf drivers used to be feared because they were hard to hit, and now some argue that cheap drivers are the easiest club in the bag to hit. Golf driver technology in head and shaft material and head design is driving rule makers to place more limits on the technology advantage. Even Jose Maria Olazabal is respectable off the tee with the latest golf driver technology.

With modern technology ever increasing, you have to be aware that the technical features of the modern golf drivers are always changing. One of the most significant recent advances in golf driver technology has been the ability of the golfer to change the design of the club head him or herself individually out on the course.

Squares, triangles and all kinds of geometry are creating a buzz in the fiercely-competitive driver market. With dozens of grips, hundreds of heads and thousands of shafts making for literally millions of club combinations, more of us are turning to custom fitters.

Remember the “Me” generation? Golf driver technology, is now in the middle of a movement of its own. Call it the “MOI” generation. With advances in golf driver technology and the general fitness of a 21st century golfer, are we still driving for show?

Golf shaft technology

Golf shaft technology has moved on considerably in recent years. Graphite golf shafts can now weigh as little as 40 grams compared to steel golf shafts in the region of 120 grams.

Golf shaft technology is as interesting as any golf technology. The advances in golf shaft technology have created some truly amazing features. For example, the development of graphite, the different levels of flex and kick points.

Graphite shafts start out as successive layers of graphite fibres held together by a resin (not unlike a form of epoxy) that is called a "binder" material. These sheets of graphite fibre-plus-binder material are called "pre-preg".

New golf technology

Currently, some professionals use 10.5 degrees of loft in a driver. Earlier, however, it was not so. Golf players believed that it would be always better if the loft on a driver were less.
